Paleolithic Diet

The paleo diet focuses on eating foods that can be hunted or gathered. It reflects the stone-age diets and is often referred to as the caveman diet. The main food groups in it are fish, fruits, vegetables, lean meats, seeds, and nuts. It is an all-natural diet that limits the intake of processed foods in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Most dairy products, sugars, grains, and artificial sweeteners are avoided when you are paleolithic.

Pros:

Rich in nutrient-dense foods- All of the foods you eat in this diet are whole and natural. You will know what is going in your body at all times and will be getting a lot of important components of a healthy diet.

Multiple health benefits- The paleo diet can cause you to have healthy blood glucose, lower blood pressure, and improved cholesterol levels. It can also create a general lower all-cause mortality risk. These all will add to the quality of your health and will help you to live longer, healthier lives.

Cons:

Eliminates food groups- With a diet this restrictive, you could be missing out on vital nutrients. Aside from that, you will be stuck eating the same foods really often, which may get boring and make you less excited about eating. When this happens, you become more likely to eat “cheat meals” and will eventually quit the diet altogether.

Not a long-term diet- As I said before, this diet may not be sustainable with all of its restrictions, so it is better to only participate in it for a short amount of time. Too much time on this diet may cause all of your progress to backfire.

Popular Paleo Foods:

  • Meat: beef, lamb, chicken, turkey, pork

  • Fish: salmon, trout, shellfish

  • Vegetables: broccoli, kale, peppers, carrots

  • Fruits: apples, bananas, oranges, pears

  • Nuts: almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts

Before starting this diet, it is very important that you research more into it, so you get a better understanding of what it entails. This is a more difficult diet to follow and it is not as sustainable as other diets may be.
